What is It?

Resting metabolic rate is the amount of energy an individual uses during a non-active day. Basically, resting metabolic rate is a measure of the amount of energy it takes for a person to maintain their essential body functions. A person’s resting metabolic rate is usually between seventy and seventy-five percent of their normal daily energy expenditure.

This measurement can be affected by a wide range of factors, including:

  • Gender
  • Height
  • Weight
  • Activity level
  • Race
  • Climate

How can it be Measured?

The test that we provide our patients at Better Life for measuring resting metabolic rate is extraordinarily straightforward and easy. However, prior to this test, patients need to avoid exercising, eating, and consuming stimulants for a certain period of time. The specific amount of time will be discussed before undergoing this test.

During the resting metabolic rate exam, patients are instructed to lie down on a recliner in our office for 15-20 minutes. During this time, their breathing is monitored through a tube. This tube collects the exhaled air and analyzes the concentration of oxygen and carbon dioxide. When plugged into a complex mathematical formula, this information can be used to determine resting metabolic rate.

Why is it Important?

Because resting metabolic rate is a measurement of the amount of energy a patient uses during an inactive day, the results of this test can be used to determine the minimum number of calories that a patient needs to consume per day.

Using this information, our medical team can determine each patient’s optimum balance of caloric input and output. Finding this balance of calorie consumption and exercise virtually guarantees that the patient will begin to lose weight, look better, and feel healthier. Assessing resting metabolic rate completely takes the guesswork out of weight loss and simplifies it into an easy to understand science that brings real, lasting results.

Our practice is proud to bring effective age management programs to male and female patients in the Charlotte, North Carolina, and Charleston, South Carolina areas.
