Katrina grew up in Lakeland, Florida and graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and Sports Studies with a concentration in Allied Health and a minor in Psychology. She moved to Charlotte, North Carolina to pursue a Master’s degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology. She was a graduate assistant for the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where she ran a grant-funded program through Charlotte Mecklenburg Senior Centers. She also interned in many areas of rehabilitation, including cardiac, pulmonary, and cancer rehabilitation. She completed her thesis through her assistantship and studied “the effects of a resistance training program on strength, range of motion, and ankle brachial index in arthritic geriatric patients.” She completed her Master’s in 2009 and worked in bariatric medical wellness, group fitness training, and private personal training before starting her position as an Exercise and Lifestyle Specialist at with Dr Barber. She is excited to be a part of the Better Life team and provide excellent care to her new and existing patients.
She became interested in the health field after years of sports injuries, rehabilitation, and knee surgeries of her own. She grew up in a health and science-focused household, ran her first race with both of her parents, and participated in soccer and track during her middle school and high school years. She knew at an early age the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle and injury and disease prevention. She never saw first-hand the true dangers of an unhealthy lifestyle until she worked with seniors during her graduate studies. From that point forward, she decided she wanted to be on the preventative side of medicine. She believes it is important to “educate before it is late.”
Katrina is also a personal trainer and teaches group fitness classes in her spare time. She enjoys running races with her husband, trips to the mountains, long hikes, travel, hot yoga classes, and spending time with family and friends.
