Why is Sleep Important?

Regularly getting a full night of sleep is an absolutely essential part of maintaining good physical and emotional health. Consistently not getting enough sleep can make daily mental tasks more difficult, including:

  • Making decisions
  • Regulating emotions
  • Coping with change
  • Learning new information

Regular sleep is also vital to maintaining good physical health. Lack of sleep is the number one cause of premature aging. This is because sleep is a necessary part of healing and repairing the body, maintaining a healthy balance of hormones, and operating the immune system. Chronic lack of sleep can increase a person’s risk of developing heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. It also makes individuals more likely to become obese or suffer from a stroke.

While changes in sleeping patterns are a normal part of the aging process, these changes can begin to take a physical and mental toll over time. Fortunately, Better Life offers our patients an at home sleep study program that can help them learn more about their sleeping patterns and work to make them as healthy and consistent as possible.

How Does the At Home Sleep Study Work?

Our at home sleep study is a great way for patients who are having trouble sleeping, not waking up feeling rested, or snoring so loudly that they disturb their significant other to correct their sleep-related problems. This study is a simple, easy way for patients to record their sleeping habits in the comfort of their homes.

During the course of the at home sleep study, patients must use a small, oval-shaped machine and two tiny electrodes to monitor their heart rate and respiration rates while they sleep. One electrode is placed on the upper left area of the chest, while the other is placed over the ribs. This device will need to be worn for two full nights.

Once two nights have passed, patients bring this device back to our office so that our physicians can assess the information it has collected. Our specialists at Better Life use this information to help recommend both lifestyle and medication changes that can help patients get longer, higher quality sleep.
